A cut above the usual, cheesy rom-coms on Netflix, The Half of It packs enough old-school romantic charm in a contemporary setting for it to work. The fictional town of Squahamish bears witness to an amusing love triangle. Paul) a jock, Ellie) an introverted nerd, and (Aster) a high-school hottie. While the film is mostly told from the point of view of Ellie, writer-director Alice Wu succeeds in giving each of these characters their own discernible traits.
Writing a love letter to your crush may come across as quite old-fashioned for a modern rom-com, but The Half of It manages to get away with it - this is mostly because the writing is nuanced and the scenes depicting the idea are crafted (and performed) well. I"m not going to hail this movie because it represents an Asian-American"s journey of lesbian love, but for Leah Lewis" effort in making Ellie a likeable, relatable person who we feel like rooting for. The situational humor too, is well-written and doesn"t feel out of place.
Speaking of that much-talked-about "church" scene, it was corny to an extent but the arcs of the lead trio come full (or at least, close to full) circle in it. I also liked how the little joys in the lives of these Squahamish residents also found their rightful place in the script - the sausage tacos, the "back-and-forth" wall art, chilling in a hot spring, and cute textual conversations. It"s a feel-good coming-of-age flick that"s worth your time, even if it doesn"t aspire to become extraordinary.
